Oil Candle Making Tips That Will Make You Forget Candle Making Wax
So you have discovered the art of making your own candles and you have succeeded in mastering the techniques of making all sorts of candles including gel candles, container candles, pillar candles and votive candles and you feel rather knowledgeable in your candle making abilities. And then someone mentions “oil candles” and you think what in the world are oil candles?
An oil candle is nothing more in its most elementary form than a container of flammable oil equipped with a wick. The wick can be any material that will burn and enable capillary action with the fuel. They don’t have any wax in their makeup but their operation is close enough to traditional candles to merit the candle designation.
The attractive feature of oil candles is the nearly infinite variety of shapes, sizes, aromas and colors that they can be used in crafting beautiful oil candle creations. Any flame proof container can be used as the fuel container and this includes such things as an old mason jar, a favorite wine bottle or any glass jar or bottle. Many types of oil candle bottles look great when loaded up with decorative items. Here are a few examples that work great:
* Tureen
* Hexagon
* Apothecary
* Jelly
* Keepsake
* Victorian
* Beveled square
* Mason
* Oval hex
* Square mason
Making oil candles is much less involved than their wax cousins. Here are the supplies a chandler would need to make oil candle:
* Inflammable container (bottle, jar, Prince Albert tobacco can, etc.)
* Liquid paraffin oil (preferred)
* Funnel
* Wick (specified for oil candles)
* Thermal glass wick tube (correct size for the container of your choice)
* Adapter adjustment ring (depending on choice of container)
When all the components and supplies are obtained you are ready to make an oil candle. To make a basic oil candle just follow these easy steps:
1. Select the container to be used and insure it is in the right condition to hold the fuel securely. Don’t use a container that is cracked or damaged because it could create a fire hazard.
2. Fill the container w

ith liquid fuel oil to just below the top of the container.
3. load the wick into the glass tube with it protruding approximately 1/4 inch above the tube.
4. Install the glass tube down into the oil in the container and secure it so that the top of the tube is slightly below the top of the container. The mechanism securing the tube will vary depending on the size and configuration of the top of the container. Sometimes practical holders can be obtained from suppliers and other times an adequate holder must be fashioned by the chandler.
With this understanding of making a basic oil candle now one can consider enhancing it by adding the following to the fuel oil: beads, scents, fruit, marbles, flower petals or any other non-flammable decorative item.
With this information you are now ready to make your own beautiful oil candles. They will add much warmth and beauty to any room. When placed on the dining room table during those special occasions they only add to the aura of the event and make it more meaningful for everyone in attendance. So go out today and start making those beautiful additions to family of candles.
